Wrestling stadium renamed
The newly-contructed wrestling venue at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex was re-christened K.D. Jadhav Stadium here on Tuesday. Jadhav was independent India’s first individual Olympic medallist, when he won the wrestling bronze at the 1952 Olympic Games held in Helsinki.
The stadium, one of the venues for the October 3 to 14 Commonwealth Games, was inaugurated in April this year and has a seating capacity of 6,000. It has been built over an area of 22,350 square metre at a cost of Rs 120 crores.
Beijing Olympics bronze medallist Sushil Kumar said Jadhav’s achievement was a motivation for him and his colleagues.
“Such initiatives by the government are a great motivation for the athletes. Jadhav was a true legend and we’ll always draw inspiration from his achievements,” Sushil said.
