Vashista S. Pawar, Class 11 student at Stanes A.I. Higher Secondary School, has won a ticket to the prestigious Faldo Series Grand Final scheduled to take place in China, in the second week of March.

The young golfer is the grandson of one of the founding members of the Coimbatore Golf Course and Club, P.B.H. Pawar.

“I started playing golf when I was seven. I developed an interest in the sport after watching my grandfather play. On the first day of my training, he briefed me about the rules of golf. A week later, he bought me my first golf set,” says Vashista.

“My grandfather took me to my first tournament when I was nine. I didn’t win anything but it was an experience. I won my first tournament when I was 11, in the C category held in Jaipur where met the Maharaja of Jaipur,” Vashista fondly recalls.

The young golfer goes on to share a warm sentiment, saying, “I am very grateful to my parents, who have been very supportive and of course, my granddad will always be my true mentor”

A week ago, Vashista participated in the Centenary Cup, at the Bangalore Golf Club. He says, “I represented the Coimbatore Golf Club and stood second in the tournament overall.”

“In October 2011, I won the prestigious Indian league of the Faldo Series held in Pune, hosted by the IGU.

I was selected to represent my country and personally invited by Sir Nick Faldo, to participate in the prestigious Faldo Series Grand Final, scheduled to take place at the Mission Hills Golf Course in Chen Zen,” he proudly adds.

“I currently coach under Bamby Randhawa in Bangalore. He is the director of instruction at the famous Touché Academy in Bangalore, and I go there once a month. Apart from that, I practise five days a week at the Coimbatore golf course,” says Vashista on his training.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
