Kerala Food and Civil Supplies Minister, T.M. Jacob passed away late on Sunday night. Jacob, 61, had been undergoing treatment for Hepatitis-B at Lakeshore hospital here for the last 20 days.
Jacob represented Piravom constituency in the present Assembly and was chairman of the Kerala Congress (Jacob) faction.
Born on September 16, 1950, Jacob entered politics while a student and was active in Kerala Congress since its inception in 1964. He was the general secretary of Kerala Students Congress, the student wing of the party, in 1971 and its president from 1972 to 1975.
An orator and legislator, Jacob was first elected to the state legislature in 1977 from Piravom and the youngest member then. He had been a legislator since then for eight times, except during the last Assembly.
He served as the education minister 1982 to 87 in the ministry headed by K Karunakaran.
From 1991 to 1995 he was irrigation and cultural affairs minister. He held the same portfolio during the reign of Mr A.K. Antony from 1995 to 1996.
A gifted writer as well, his literary accomplishments include the books Ente China Paryadanam (Malayalam) and My China Diary (English).
