The Delhi high court on Friday transferred the investigation into the murder of 20-year-old IT student Shobhit Modi to the crime branch of Delhi police.
Justice Mukta Gupta declined the plea by Shobhit’s father, Suraj Modi, to transfer the investigation from Delhi police to CBI and directed that the probe should be carried out by the crime branch.
“The investigation is to be carried out by the crime branch of Delhi police under the direct supervision of the DCP concerned,” Justice Gupta said.
Shobhit, a student of Manav Rachna University in Faridabad, was stabbed to death by unidentified persons near his Vasant Kunj residence on May 5.
Shobhit’s father had filed a petition before the high court seeking transfer of the case to CBI, alleging that the police had failed to find any clue about the culprits although the police officials were given vital evidence including Shobhit’s laptop and mobile phone data.
Accusing the father and brother of Shobhit’s girlfriend of being involved in the murder, the slain youth’s family had alleged that the city police was ignoring significant leads in the case, including the contents of the SMSs exchanged between the victim and his girlfriend.
Opposing the plea for transfer of the probe, the city police had told the court that it had already examined over 1,100 people in connection with the case. During the last hearing, the Delhi police counsel had submitted that several teams were working under the supervision of DCP (south) but no clue had been found.
