In an indication that the winter session of Parliament would be stormy, the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Sunday said that Left parties will move an adjournment motion against the government on the price rise issue while the
BJP-led NDA will finalise its session strategy on Monday when its leaders will meet. The BJP, meanwhile, has already indicated that it will raise the price rise and corruption issues during the session.
On the concluding day of its two-day national executive meet, CPI general secretary A.B. Bardhan said, “The Left (parties) itself will bring the adjournment motion. There is no relief to common man and no steps from the government (to bring down prices of essential commodities) despite Parliament passing a unanimous resolution earlier.”
The CPI, meanwhile, also decided to launch nationwide protests if the UPA government at the Centre fails to pass a “strong Lokpal Bill” in the winter session. Mr Bardhan accused the government of not taking adequate measures to bring down the double-digit inflation. He also said that there has been no relief to common man and no steps from the government despite Parliament passing a unanimous resolution earlier.
Meanwhile, criticising senior BJP leader L.K. Advani’s “Jan Chetna” yatra, Mr Bardhan said “The yatra was an attempt to refurbish his image to stake claim for the Prime Minister’s post. That pipe dream should be given up.”
Opposing frequent hikes in petrol prices, he demanded the government reverse deregulation and decontrol of fuel prices in the interests of the common man. The party said it would oppose the cash transfer scheme and any “attempt to tinker with (the definition of) poor”.
