After a Cabinet meeting, the city government on Thursday decided to call a session of Delhi Assembly on November 30 and December 1 to finalise the trifurcation of the MCD. The government has already received a conformation letter from the Centre.
“We have decided to call two-day Assembly session to pass the bill of MCD trifurcation. We have received the letter from the Centre,” chief minister Sheila Dikshit told reporters here.
During the two-day session, the bill to trifurcate the MCD, the second largest municipal corporation in the country, will be passed. The move to split the BJP-ruled MCD into three units is aimed at ensuring better delivery of civic services and streamlining its functioning.
As per the proposal, the new civic bodies in North and South Delhi will have 104 wards each while the civic body in East Delhi will have 64 wards and a directorate of municipal services would be set up to coordinate the functioning of the three bodies.
Home minister P. Chidambaram signed the file giving approval for trifurcation of MCD on Wednesday. The Centre has also approved the proposal for increasing reservation of seats for women in the civic body to 50 per cent from 33 per cent. Officials said the state election commission is likely to issue notification in February for civic polls in early April and the entire process of trifurcation will have to be completed by January.
