Mayor Jose Benitez, head of the coastal town of Huarmey in Peru, has warned residents that the town's water could 'cause a rise in homosexuality' among the population.
Benitez substantiated his claim by saying the town's water was showing dangerously high levels of strontium - a metal that he believes reduces male hormones.
Website Gawker wrote that Benitez's claim has had a precedent.
A TV report from 2000 claimed the town, from where Huarmey draws its water, witnessed 14,000 males turning gay.
However, the report on Tabalosos turned out to be 'a myth', Gawker wrote.
