The southeast Delhi police has arrested a “super conman” who used to extort money from innocent commuters by pretending that their vehicles had run over him and threatened to take legal action against them. The police said the most
of his victims were in hurry to reach their destination and thus used to pay up. The accused is believed to be involved in dozens of such cases over the last three years.
Jagat Prasad, a resident of Faridabad, was arrested last Saturday following a complaint by one of his many victims identified as Anshu Tandon, a resident of Jangpura Extension, whom Prasad tried to fool for the second time in a span of few days.
“I was driving to Khan Market and had halted at the red light on Mathura Road, Nizamuddin West, when Prasad appeared from behind a tree and pushed the car. Since the light was red and the car was stationary, he knocked on the window and demanded I open the door,” the victim told the police.
“On doing so, Prasad got into my car and demanded `2,000 saying that I had run over his foot and if I did not pay he would call the police. I immediately recognised him as few days back, he had extorted `1,500 from me at the red light. I had panicked that day as I was in a hurry. So I gave into his demand and didn’t lodge a complaint,” she said.
“On Saturday, when I clearly recognised him, I threatened him that I would call the police. He immediately opened the door and ran,” she said.
The police said Ms Tandan ran behind him and chased him for some distance and finally caught him.
A PCR van was standing nearby and she handed him over to the police following which a case was registered.
“We are suspecting that he is involved in a large number of such cases. He is a master trickster and even tried to mislead the police in investigations. We are expecting more complaints against him,” a senior police official said.
