A Delhi government hospital doctor was sent to jail for three years by a city court for demanding and accepting bribe to give a clear autopsy report of a road accident victim.
Special judge Padam Kant Saxena sentenced Dr Manoj Nagpal of Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for demanding a `10,000 bribe from Kuldeep Singh, the victim’s relative, to certify in the report that the victim was not under the influence of liquor.
“The evidence amply goes to show that there was a demand of bribe of `10,000 by the accused from the complainant for not mentioning the presence of liquor in the post-mortem report of his cousin deceased Kuldeep Singh...,” the court said.
Complainant Vijay Kumar’s brother Kuldeep Singh had died in an accident. His post-mortem was conducted by Dr Nagpal at DDU Hospital and Kumar was informed that the doctor had opined that his brother Singh had consumed alcohol.
Kumar told the court that as Singh never consumed liquor, he went to talk to Dr Nagpal on May 7, 2003. He said his compounder gave him a slip with Nagpal’s telephone number and instructed him to call him. When contacted, Dr Nagpal asked Kumar to meet him outside a restaurant at Prashant Vihar the same evening. During the meeting, he asked Kumar to pay `10,000 if he wanted him to opine that Singh had not consumed alcohol.
Kumar lodged a complaint with the CBI following which a trap was laid and Nagpal was caught red-handed.
