“Losing weight is like chasing the hot guy. It’s the moment of mixed feelings including ecstasy, joy, tear, sadness etc and when you get him, you have to be with it till eternity. It’s all about finding that happy weight that one can feel good about,” said Kalli Puri, at the launch of her weight loss memoir Confession of her Serial Dieter in the capital recently.
Looking stunning in a white gown, Kalli said it’s the love of her family and friends that motivated her to come down from 103 kgs to her new 60 kgs avatar.
“Weight is very persuasive, invasive, but it gives me immense pleasure to be half the person I was. I lost 40 kgs in 18 months. It’s gives you a sense of freedom and liberty and that’s the biggest achievement. I belong to the fit family. My dad is a marathon runner, my husband has a six-pack ab and my sister (Koel) has a perfect hourglass figure. Me with size 22, always fantasising food was a misfit. My book is nothing but a self-delusion and my constant struggle with weight since childhood.”
Actress Sonam Kapoor launched the booka and both Kalli and Sonam happily confessed about their serial diets, ongoing battle against weight and much more.
So, what motivated Sonam to get that hot figure?
“I was 63 kgs at the age of 12. Unlike other girls who would play with dolls, I used to read books and eat chocolates like peanuts. I was eating unhealthy, with fat rolls all over the body and hair on my face. I was 86 at the age of 19, when Sanjay Leela Bansali gave me a reality check and told me that my face is pretty, but my body looks like one old Ajanta and Ellora painting. That moment rang a bell,” shares Sonam.
While Kalli followed about 48 diets and workouts, it took Sonam two years to get down to 61 kgs, which included Suryanamaskars, pineapple diet and days of starvation. Sharing their anecdotes, Kalli shares, “My mother used to put me on diet at the age of 4. She used to ask me take six rounds of the big lawn and then would treat me with one honey jam toast. It was painful.”
While Sonam’s mother put her though a dietician, who asked her to eat jowar roti, she would secretly feed herself to pizzas and burgers. “I also went on a pineapple diet, which apparently burns fat and fills the stomach instantly,” she says.
Sharing her heartbreaking moment, Kalli says she got back on her strive to lose weight when she went to her kids’ school and couldn’t fit into the tiny chairs like other yummy mummies did. “It’s then I thought that this is not cool at all. I have great friends and they boycotted words like tun-tun or fat ass, so that I don’t feel bad. It made me realise that it’s time to take the plunge and battle the weight out.”
It’s not the end of road for Sonam, who is still struggling to reach her dream weight of 56 kgs. She does confesses she can never dare to wear a bikini. “After losing so much weight, I have lot stretch marks and saggy bum. Bikini body is still like a dream. I love my body and it makes me feel beautiful. But I am still a fat girl inside a thin body,” she says adding that she still fantasies about junk food and is addicted to spicy Indian food like samosas, pao bhaji, ice-creams and gajar ka halwa. For Sonam, key to weight loss is to love yourself. “There is no shortcut, but 45-hour exercise daily. I practice Bikram Yoga and Pilates everyday. I don’t eat carbs after 6 pm and take Sunday breaks for my favourite to binge on dosas and walnut cakes,” she says.
