2G: No indictment of telecom policy, says Sibal

In the aftermath of Supreme Court cancelling the grant of 122 2G licences to telecom operators, Union Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal says the government will abide by the apex court ruling.

At a crowded press conference on Thursday, he hastens to add that the Prime Minister and Finance Minister are in no way responsible for the allocation of 2G spectrum. 'There is no indictment of the government's telecom policy,' he said.

As the court had delinked licence from spectrum in its ruling, hencefroth the radiowaves would be auctioned, he said.

Further, Sibal says the telecom ministry is getting ready for the auction of 4G spectrum by the end of the year. 'We will wait for TRAI recommendations for the follow up action on spectrum case,' he said.

Replying to a query, Sibal retorted that BJP had caused revenue loss as UPA government just followed their policy on the 2G spectrum allocation.

'A minister must consult everybody and not commit any irregularity,' Sibal says on lesson learnt after SC judgement.
