The DMK on Friday warned that it will launch an agitation if the Centre failed to stop the continuing attacks on Tamil Nadu fishermen by the Sri Lankan Navy. The party also blamed the Centre and state government for the impasse over Koodankulam nuclear plant row and Mullaiperiyar dam issue.
“The DMK will launch a peaceful agitation if the Centre failed to take necessary steps to immediately end the killing of the fishermen,” said the resolution adopted at the DMK’s general council meeting presided over by party chief M. Karunanidhi.
There is no headway made by the Central expert committee’s talks with protesters over the Indo-Russian Koodankulam nuclear power project, which is stalled over safety concerns of locals, said the resolution. “Inaction of the Jayalalithaa government gives rise to an impression that there is some ulterior motive behind it. Therefore, keeping in mind the national interest, the Central and state governments should act to find an early solution,” it added. While seeking reinstatement of 13,000-odd Makkal Nala Paniyalargal, (staff for people’s welfare) appointed in the previous DMK regime and dismissed by the AIADMK government, the party also demanded cancellation of appointment of former DGP R. Natraj as chairman of the TN Public Service Commission.
