[1]Even as the bidding for the fifth edition of Indian Premier League has taken place ‘relegating’ Kochi Tuskers Kerala (KTK), it is learnt that the Cochin Corporation still owes KTK nearly Rs 1.5 crore collected as advance tax for tickets. This, some eight months after the matches of last edition were concluded.
Clearly, the Cochin Corporation, that played a key role in killing the goose that laid golden eggs, has not taken its hands off it. The corporation initially slapped 48 per cent of the ticket fare as entertainment tax on all tickets and 95 per cent of the money from complimentary passes.
When a hue and cry was raised by cricket lovers, the corporation rescinded and cut the first by half to 24 percent. The KTK had been asked to remit the 24 percent entertainment tax for the value of each ticket taken for mandatory stamping by the corporation before their sale.
Now, IPL sources say the KTK is yet to be refunded the amount collected as entertainment tax on unsold tickets and passes which were returned to the corporation in June. “The corporation is duty-bound to refund the tax of the unsold tickets.
They are sending notices to us at regular intervals raising queries like why the concession was not passed on to the buyers and so on. There weren’t any such condition before,” said an official connected to IPL.
Corporation Tax Appeal Committee chairperson Ratnamma Raju said the KTK was yet to submit the documents they were asked to submit in connection with the conduct of the IPL matches. However, a KTK official said they have submitted all the documents.
and the corporation was putting up lame excuses. Despite repeated attempts, the mayor and the deputy mayor were unavailable for comment.
