How Vidya went from dirty to pregnant

When Vidya Balan acted in The Dirty Picture, few could have imagined that she would undergo a 180 degree image volte face and work in a film like Kahaani where she plays a pregnant woman in search of her husband. First looks of the film seem to have vindicated director Sujoy Ghosh’s trust and belief in Vidya, as she does look very much the part.
“Vidya is a very good actress, and for an actress, it doesn’t matter whether she is doing a glamorous role or playing a pregnant woman or a college kid. That’s her job. If she is confident enough to take on the role, it should work whatever the role demands,” he says.
In fact, says Ghosh, he had wanted Vidya to work with him in his earlier venture Alladin as well, a role that eventually went to Jacqueline Fernandes. “Vidya could have actually played that role in Alladin. Nothing was carved in stone at that point and I was just talking to Vidya about the possibility of the role.”
