The fact that ground water in Malwa, a southern area of Punjab, has traces of uranium in its ground water was established even in the past. A recent report presented by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (Barc) to the Punjab and Haryana high court has re-established this fact.
The high court had assigned this job to the Barc, when public interest litigation was filed to establish the causes of high rate of cancer in the area. The petition was filed after a UK-based toxicologist Carin Smit revealed in his study that traces of Uranium are present in the hair samples of people of Faridkot district.
The Barc has submitted its report to the high court.
