The state government on Thursday claimed that on an average a person got 45 days work under National Rural Employ-ment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) in West Bengal in 2009-10 financial year. In 2008-09, every person got only 26 days work on an average under NREGS in the state.
State finance minister Asim Dasgupta said, “In the last fiscal, we improved a lot in providing work under NREGS. Though we are yet to provide 100 days work on an average in a year, but in some places we have provided 70 days work.”
In 2009-10 fiscal, Rs 2,010 crores was spent in the state to provide jobs under the NREGS. “In the current fiscal, our target is to spend Rs 3,500 crores,” Dr Dasgupta said after chairing a high level meeting on the implementation of NREGS in the state.
State panchayat and rural development minister Anisur Rahaman admitted the fact that the state has miles to go to reach the target of providing 100 days work in a year.

Four names endorsed for police medal

May 13: The government has sent a proposal to the Centre recommending four names for the police medal. The names include Arjun Singh Thakuri, Gopal Krishna Chhetri, Lal Bahadur — the EFR personnel who retaliated to the Maoists when the Sildah camp was attacked and Rabilochon Mitra, IC Sarenga police station in Bankura district.
DG Bhupinder Singh said, “We have recommended these four names to the state government for the police medal for gallantry.”
Recently the police reconstructed the sequence of events which took place at the EFR camp at Sildah when the camp was attacked by the Maoists and came into conclusion that Arjun Singh Thakuri, Gopal Krishna Chhetri and Lal Bahadur retaliated to the Maoists.
