A Goregaon resident who faked her own “attempted rape” has told the police that she had hoped to be sent home after her “image was tainted”.
According to the Vanrai police, the woman was frustrated as her in-laws would not let her work, and she wanted her freedom from them by any means. She believed that her in-laws would drive her out if she told them that she had been violated, the police said.
“The woman worked in a call centre, but quit her job four months ago. She was not used to sitting at home, and wanted to work. However, her in-laws would not allow her, which was the issue of constant arguments between her and in-laws. Fed up of the constant disagreements, she tried to find a solution by faking her own kidnapping,” said an officer with the Vanrai police.
On Wednesday, The woman spent the day with her friend Mangesh Brid, and planned the story that she would tell her in-laws in the evening.
Somewhere along the way, they decided that registering a complaint with the police would be more effective. Accordingly, Mr Brid dropped her in Malwani, where she approached a patrolling police unit. She subsequently told the police that she had been kidnapped and robbed by four men in a Toyota Innova, who also tried to rape her, but relented when she told them that she was pregnant.
“We first got suspicious when we found no eye-witnesses to a four-hour long crime committed in broad daylight. No one from Goregaon to Malwani seemed to have noticed Ms Kale being kidnapped or being released. We then questioned her, and nailed her lies on the basis of several discrepancies that cropped up each time she repeated the story. Ms Kale finally confessed to having cooked up the story,” the officer said.
