[1]A bid by the Italian authorities to shift the case against the two marines from India to Rome, citing jurisdiction issues, may boomerang on the two Italians now in custody here.
For, the statement filed by the Italian authorities in the high court on Thursday invariably confirms the murder charge levelled against them, the state police believes.
"During the interrogation by the state police over the last one week, the Italian marines were strongly denying the murder charge leveled against them for the firing in the sea in which two fishermen had died.”
However, the Italian authorities said in the statement filed in the high court that a case of murder was registered against the marines in Rome. This could be considered as an admission of the crime," top sources in the state police told Deccan Chronicle.
Sources at the advocate general's office also said that the statement by the Italian authority could be helpful during the time of prosecution.
Leading lawyer Kaleeswaam Raj also pointed out during the trial that the document filed by the Italian authorities could become a supporting evidence for the murder charge leveled against the marines.
The statement filed by the Italian authorities said, "A case was registered against Latorre Massimiliano and Salvatore Girone of the San Marco Regiment attached to the Military Protection Department in accordance with Article 575 (murder) of the Italian penal code in Rome."
