Probe again, but to what end?

With all hell breaking loose at the City Civil Court complex on Friday, the government has ordered a judicial probe into the incident with Chief Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda saying there was a need for a full inquiry into the incident.

He said the scope of the judicial probe and what issues should come under its purview will be finalised in a day or two. The name of the retired judge to head the inquiry too would be decided by then, he said.

Mr Gowda held a series of meetings with home minister R. Ashok, chief secretary S.V. Rangananth, DG&IGP Shankar Bidari and IGP (intelligence) Gopal Hosur.

“The government is determined that such incidents do not recur,” he said, adding “the government has decided to bear medical expenses of all the injured people.”

On his part, City police commissioner B.G. Jyothiprakash Mirji, who addressed a late-evening press conference, said strict action will be initiated against the lawyers who had forcibly locked up 20 policemen in the court premises.

Cases of rioting, attack, stone-pelting and obstructing the police officers from discharging their duties will be registered against the accused, he said.

Why no action, Mr Mirji?
Mr Mirji had no answer when asked why no action was taken after the January 17 incident when lawyers had held the city hostage for over eight hours, and did much the same this Black Friday. He also brushed aside questions of an intelligence failure on their part.
