Mar George Alencherry, who arrived here from Rome on Saturday after being ordained as cardinal, has said he hopes to put the controversy over his statement on the Italian sea firing incident behind him.
The archbishop of Syro-Malabar Church, who was accorded a warm welcome at the Nedumbassery airport, reiterated that he did not state anything wrong and it was simply that an Italian news agency had blown his statement out of proportion.
Alencherry said he could feel the pain of the fishing community over the death of the two fishermen in the incident.
He said he had already issued a clarification.
In a report by Agenzia Fides, Alencherry was quoted as saying that the Kerala government should not “precipitate action” against the Italian marines and that the Opposition in Kerala would try to exploit the situation.
The report was later withdrawn and the news agency published a clarification by Cardinal Alencherry.
