An eco friendly project initiated by a group of college students and members of youth Exnora aimed at restoring Adyar creek has run in to muddle after the intervention of local corporation councillor, who feels that the river cleaning project would be an ‘hindrance’ to the biodiversity of the estuary.
It may be noted that the tree planting initiative launched by the same group in commemoration with the chief minister birthday last month also witnessed similar problems for the reasons best known to the local AIADMK workers.
Informed local sources said that the ego clash between two NGOs working on environment has led to the ugly episode.
“The public in the locality are suffering unchecked mosquito menace due to the back log of garbage and slush accumulated along the Adyar Creek. If the river is cleaned and spruced up, it will certainly improve the bio diversity and breeding up of marine fishes, but the project has hit a speed breaker, due to unnecessary intervention by vested interests”, opined Mr P. Suresh, Mellikuppam village head, Sreenivasapuram.
When contacted the local corporation councillor Ms P. Rajalakshmi denied that the work was put on hold.
The work has been suspended following rumours among the local public that the project would affect the bio diversity.
The issue is now resolved and work would begin soon, she maintained. When asked that a few AIADMK workers allegedly chased away the temporary workers of Ramkey Enviro Enginneers who were cleaning the estuary the councillor pointed fingers on the local AIADMK divisional secretary for the melee.
However when this correspondent contacted the local fishermen, they gave a clean chit to the divisional secretary.
