Zia-ur-Rehman, a suspected Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorist, on Thursday granted permission by a Delhi court to forward his nomination for upcoming MCD elections through Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati jail superintendent.
Zia-ur-Rehman, who is facing trial with 12 other accused for his alleged role in the September 2008 serial blast, is currently lodged in Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad. He was allowed by the court to file his nomination from ward no. 205 (Zakir Nagar), through jail superintendent.
Additional sessions judge Narinder Kumar, while responding to the request of the applicant, said, “Applicant is permitted to file his nomination for elections of the MCD to the concerned returning officer through superintendent of jail, Sabarmati Jail, Ahmedabad.”
Counsel M.S. Khan, in an application on behalf of Mr Rehman, submitted that “the candidature of the applicant does not suffer from any disqualification as provided under Section 9 of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act.” He added that his client, who is facing trial, has no intention to “seek release for this purpose.”
