The April 2011 Suyamvaram had become an instant hit and had sent out a message that caste and religion were no barriers when it came to tying the knot.
Enthused by the results, the Tamil Nadu Differently-Abled Welfare Association hopes to repeat the success by organising a massive Suyamvaram for the disabled on Sunday.
The Association is anticipating that over 400 persons will participate in the event which will take place at the Island grounds here.
The Association’s maiden matrimonial event for the disabled was a pleasant surprise for the differently-abled though some seemed sceptic, wondering if the episode could be sustained especially as the organisers have planned to conduct the Suyamvaram on a massive scale this time.
“We had been receiving several phone calls requesting us to conduct the event.
So we have decided to hold it this month…we hope to meet their expectations,” said Mr N. Ravi, president of TNDAWA. Speaking to this correspondent, he said a heartening factor was that many among the educated youth were keen to marry from any caste or religion.
“A healthy man had married a deaf girl last year, thus demonstrating that disabilities were not a setback in leading family life,” he added.
About 29 out of 232 persons who attended the April Suyamvaram had tied the knot. Many professionals, teachers, advocates too had registered then and a good number of Christians and Muslims had also attended. The association charges a nominal fee of `300 for enrolment and provides free lunch and coffee on the day.
