The high court has directed the police to provide adequate protection for the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation to set up the machinery for treating the leachate waste at the Vilappilsala plant.
A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Manjula Chellur and Justice V. Chithambaresh passed the order based on a plea for police protection for the plant.
In the plea, the corporation submitted that valuable machinery brought from Pune could not be installed due to the residents’ protests, and that its plea to the DGP for police protection to take machinery to the site had not been heeded.
The court had earlier criticised the police for its inaction on the waste management issue.
The corporation has, so far, treated 4800 metric ton of solid waste in the plant, consul for the corporation N. Nandakumara Menon submitted. "Sanitary land filling technique can be used to treat non-biodegradable waste and 300 loads of clay are needed for this, he said.
