Ranbir just follows his art

The awards on Ranbir Kapoor’s shelf show no signs of easing up anytime soon, nor does the applause he’s receiving for Rockstar. But let alone cash in on the success of the film, Ranbir has almost consciously been avoiding signing on the more commercial projects. He is currently working on Anurag Basu’s Barfi, and after that will come Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet, both films which would be termed “off-beat”.
Ranbir insists the line between arthouse and commercial cinema has blurred. “Films like Wake Up Sid, Rocket Singh or Rockstar or Barfi are all engaging and entertaining films. I don’t see them as arthouse cinema. The line between the two has dimmed if you believe in the director’s vision and the story,” he says.
What’s more, he says he doesn’t believe in sticking to his comfort zones, insisting that it’s his duty as an actor to try out newer genres. “I cannot do a Singham or a Dabangg because I will fail in it. I don’t have the stardom or persona to carry it off. I can play Jordan because I knew director Imtiaz Ali will inspire me to give my best. I can’t do a film that relies on me. I need to rely on the movie,” he explains.
