HC order helps end man’s long wait for appointment

On Tuesday, 31-year-old P. Kumar’s long wait was over. When TNPSC chairman R. Nataraj handed over the appointment letter to the young constable working in the city, Mr Kumar realised his dream.

The commission had withheld his appointment order, pending verification of his community. “Now, the verification process is over and we have issued the order to him,” Mr Nataraj said.

Mr Kumar belongs to Malyali tribe in the Kalvarayan hills. It is mandatory for TNPSC to verify the caste background of SC/ST candidates.

The verification is done through the district vigilance committees for SC candidates and the state-level vigilance committees, which include an anthropologist, for ST candidates.

Mr Kumar joined the service as constable in 2002 and attended the group I examination in 2007. “I cleared the preliminary examination, and in 2008, the written examinations and interview.

In November 2009, everybody else got their appointment order. When I enquired, I was told that the verification of my caste was causing the delay,” Mr Kumar told Deccan Chronicle.

“Without this order, I would have probably retired as inspector,” says Mr Kumar who will now become a deputy superintendent of police. “Now, I can hope to retire as inspector general.”

Recently, the high court had directed TNPSC to release the appointment orders to the candidates and modify them later if the verification proved otherwise. This would benefit 509 candidates whose orders have been withheld for years, pending verification.
