The chairman of the hawkers committee on Wednesday informed the Madras high court that despite earlier directions from the committee to evict unauthorised hawkers from NSC Bose road, corporation officials and the police department have failed to implement this.
On Zenis Street, Saidapet, lots were drawn for 87 hawkers and ID cards issued in 2007, said Justice A. Ramamurthi, a retired judge of the high court who is the chairman of the hawkers committee, adding that they have shifted to the marketplace.
However, the street is occupied by unauthorised hawkers. The authorities have not taken steps to notify this street as a no-hawking zone but were instead encouraging hawking in the area, he alleged.
In Shenoy Nagar and Aminjikarai, the existing market has been improved and the hawkers were identified.
However, none of them have moved to the new place. In Purasawalkkam and Egmore, despite allotment in the Lilly Pond Complex, the hawkers continue to hawk in the same old place and were not evicted by the officials.
From Anna Statue to Bilal Hotel, alternative places were identified on Link Road and ID cards were issued to hawkers. However, they continued in the same place.
Letters have been sent to the authorities but action was not taken, he said.
