It may be hard to believe, but the immigration rackets that illegally export people to other countries are taking advantage of foreign stage shows performed by local troupes.
The stage shows, organised by the associations of non-resident Keralites, offer easier routes for such rackets, says a police source.
This is on the likes of Punjabi pop singer Daler Mehendi, who was detained by the Delhi police in 2003, along with his brother for their involvement in an immigration racket, wherein they airlifted hopeful migrants, passing them off as members of the troupe.
A large number of people are being taken to the Gulf, Europe and North American countries under the cover of performances like dance, song and skits.
“The visas may be arranged for, say, 35 people; and such temporary visas are easy to get too. This includes performers, choreographers and beauticians. However, not all of them return home, ” said a top police source.
It is believed that the pravasi malayali organisations also play a silent role in such human trafficking. “Not that all the troupes indulge in such rackets. There are several genuine groups.
But, surely, there are many troupes that help people out too. It is evident when they book tickets,” said Paulose K. Mathew, the Kerala chapter chairman of the Travel Agents Federation of India.
