A visibly-emotional defence minister A.K. Antony turned the tables on Army Chief Gen. V.K. Singh on Tuesday, telling Parliament he had asked him (Gen. Singh) to take action against the person who allegedly offered bribes, but the Chief didn’t want to pursue the matter then. Mr Antony told the Rajya Sabha Gen. Singh had named Lt. Gen. Tejinder Singh (Retd) as the man who offered the bribe.
On Tuesday Lt. Gen. Tejinder Singh, a former chief of the Defence Intelligence Agency, who was directly accused by the Army of offering bribes on behalf of a private company earlier this month, also filed a criminal defamation case against Gen. V.K. Singh and some other Army officers in a Delhi court. Rejecting allegations of offering bribes, Lt. Gen. Singh asked the court to summon and initiate proceedings against Gen. Singh for making “libellous” statement in the media.
The CBI also officially denied speculation that it had received an audiotape carrying a conversation purportedly between the Army Chief and another person, in connection with the case, making it clear that no such tape had been handed over.
