Members of the military junta that seized power in Mali last week will not be allowed to stand in legislative and presidential elections, under the new constitution outlined late on Tuesday.
"Any person having been a member of the National Committee for the Recovery of Democracy and the Restoration of the Rule (the junta)" could not stand for office, according to the text read out on state television.
The new rulers have not set a date for elections.
The military junta announced it had adopted a new 'fundamental act' designed to guarantee the rule of law in the western African nation and "a pluralist democracy".
The junta, which suspended the existing constitution when it seized power on March 22, said in a text read out by a soldier on state television that the new document guaranteed basic human rights.
