[1]Fifty-five-year-old Salomi of Chennai is back to her normal life after an abdominal tumour weighing 56.94 kg was successfully removed from her body at M.S. Ramaiah Hospital in Bengaluru.
According to the hospital, this could be the largest abdominal tumour operated upon in India.
Mrs Salomi had noticed a small mass in the abdomen 15 years ago which gradually started growing leaving her bed-ridden for the last six years. She was dependent on her family for day-to-day routines until she was reffered to the Bengaluru hospital a week ago.
Dr Madhu Y.C., Surgical Oncologist at M.S. Ramaiah Hospital, evaluated the patient and the operation was conducted on Tuesday. He said: “The ultrasound report was not so clear. With difficulty, the CT scan revealed a massive thick walled abdominal tumour of the ovarian origin”.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Dr Madhu said: “Operating large tumours carry a very high risk of death of the patient during removal of the large mass. Surgeons had to stand in an awkward positions while operating the patient. The patient had to be operated in lateral position as she could not lie down in a normal position. After the surgery, Mrs Salomi is doing fine and eating normally. Within a week, she will be fit for discharge”, he added.
