The National Cadet Corps, headed by a lieutenant-general, has criticised Commonwealth Games organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi for his “belated” decision to not seek the help of 2,500 NCC cadets from outside Delhi for the October event. The NCC said this would “demoralise” the organisation and its cadets from
different states who had spent much preparing for their role at the Games at the cost of their studies. Mr Kalmadi had said there were enough NCC cadets in the Delhi region and those from elsewhere were not needed.
In a letter dated May 11, 2010, Lt. Gen. R.K. Karwal, the NCC director-general, told Mr Kalmadi: “The requirement of NCC volunteers for the Commonwealth Games came from the chief minister (of) Delhi and the organising committee last year, and our cadets were enthusiastically looking forward to participating in this international event. Your decision to do away with the requirement of 2,500 cadet volunteers from other states at this belated stage would result in a major disappointment for the aspiring cadets and their parents, and be demoralising for the organisation.”
