Sleuths from the city police intelligence section, once known for focusing only on political intelligence, are now more into proactive policing.
Recently, they helped to crack two murder cases and last week another constable from the wing rescued a worker from a 15-feet-deep pit. In all these incidents, their bosses, including the city police commissioner J.K. Tripathy, had lauded their efforts and rewarded them.
“If they go beyond their call of duty and contribute to solve crimes and help people, we have to naturally motivate them with good words and rewards,” noted a senior city police official.
Despite an ongoing tussle between the law & order wing and the intelligence section over trust quotient with each other, top brass in the city police try their best to put them together for better policing.
Two weeks ago, two police personnel from the intelligence section — special sub inspector D. Nithyavel of Kodungaiyur police station and head constable R. Nandagopal attached to Thirunindraoor — were honoured by the police commissioner for their inputs that helped solve two murders.
Based on the input provided by Nithyavel, the police unravelled the mystery behind a body found on railway track in Basin Bridge and arrested five people. Nandagopal had provided information that led to solving of murder of a 64 year-old man in Thirunindraoor.
Swift action by another intelligence section sleuth saved the life of a casual labourer who fell into a pit in Ambattur on Saturday.
The victim Shanta Kumar Saav, 27, from Odisha was digging a sewage drain at Red Hills Road in Ambattur when he tripped and fell into the pit. Hearing his cries for help, Bala Murugan, an IS constable who was passing by, rushed to his rescue and dragged him out.
