E-waste campaign in full bloom

The Green Chronicle campaign by DC hit the streets of Chennai this weekend. With the social welfare minister Ms B.Valarmathi giving away an outdated inverter and old cables from her house in KK Nagar for recycling, the e-waste campaign picked up speed. We have collected nearly 250 kgs of e-waste within two days.

As the minister was disposing of e-waste, neighbors in the area gathered around her and listened to her talk on e-waste. Within a few minutes they also came to our van laden with their old cables, lights and broken telephones.

DC’s green van then zoomed into Kotturpuram to pick up two old cell phones from Anna University vice chancellor P.Mannar Jawahar and Madras University VC G.Thiruvasagam gave away an outdated inverter. Both academicians promised to spread awareness among their students.

It’s not just celebrities. Many of our readers and their friends responded to the campaign. With our mobiles ringing throughout the day, we visited houses in Adyar, Mylapore, AnnaNagar, Ambattur and Perambur to help people safely get rid of their hoarded electronic waste.

R. Gurusamy, 77, a retired professor from Gopalapuram gave away a ten-year-old fax machine along with cables. “I support the Green Chronicle campaign. This is my small contribution. I am now aware of safe disposal of outdated electronics,” he said. His wife, 70-year-old Seethalakshmi seemed relieved as she loaded the waste in our van.

Charted accountant G. Balakrishnan cleared out two obsolete CPUs, monitors, and printers from his office at Gopalapuram. Advertising consultant K. Bhargavan gave away his old camera, tape recorder, cassettes and a music player. His ten-year-old VCR was also packed into the e-van.

Thanks to our readers publicising the campaign through word of mouth, Green Chronicle bloomed successfully this weekend. With the three-week regular watering through our columns, featuring experts’ and readers’ discussions about electronic waste, our Green Chronicle is steadily growing.
