The Anti Corruption Bureau on Tuesday arrested retired IAS official N. Nageshwar Rao for conniving with the liquor syndicates and excise officials and allowing irregularities in liquor auctions while he was working as Khammam district collector. The ACB also arrested 11 other persons belonging to the liquor syndicate of Nunna Venkata Ramana, whose names were incorporated illegally into the list of bidders in the 2010 liquor auctions. More arrests of district collectors over the liquor auctions are expected.
On March 2, the ACB registered a case against officials who processed the files and manipulated various records subsequent to the approval of the successful bidder for 16 liquor shops in Khammam. Venkata Ramana was arrested earlier and is in jail. Four officials of the excise department, including a deputy commissioner, were arrested on March 4. Nageshwar Rao was the auctioning authority and turned a blind eye to the irregularities and even failed to act on a report submitted by the RDO. The other arrested members of the liquor syndicate are Ch. Narayana, A. Anand Rao, A. Babji, Naveen Kumar, P. Anjaiah, Anwar Basha, Jani Miya, P. Rama Rao, Nunna Ramesh, Bandi Venkatesh and Shaik Jani Miya.
