Making a sensational claim, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday said she had information there could be a mid-term general election in the country as early as in 2013.
“In New Delhi recently, a political party held a meeting where it was decided the Lok Sabha election should be brought ahead to 2013,” she said, asking Trinamul Congress members to be prepared for an election at any time.
Addressing a party meeting at Kolkata’s Maharashtra Niwas, where Subrata Bakshi was re-elected state party chief, Ms Banerjee refused to name the political party she was referring to, but left no one in doubt what she meant.
“I have information they discussed advancement of the Lok Sabha election to 2013,” she said. Turning to railway minister Mukul Roy sitting next to her, Ms Banerjee asked: “Mukul, wasn’t such a meeting held in Delhi?” He nodded.
Adressing partymen a year after she came to power, Ms Banerjee asked them to highlight her government’s achievements. “We completed in one year the work which was to be completed in five years,” she added.
