TP Chandrasekharan fought for people: Mahasweta

Jnanpith laureate Mahasweta Devi came out heavily against the CPM for the extreme criminalisation of politics in the Kerala.

Hiring contract killers for eliminating opponents is quite unbecoming of a party, she told mediapersons after offering her condolences to T.P. Chandrasekharan’s family, at Onchiyam, near here on Saturday.

The CPM should be swept away from West Bengal and Kerala, and new political parties must come up, she said.

“Communism does not mean sending goons to kill people. These parties should be swept away and new parties much come up. Chandrasekharan was a man who fought for the people. His murder is unjust and what happened is heartbreaking,” she said.

“Cultural leaders and writers should raise their voice against the brutal incident,” she said raising concern over the alleged reports that the CPM was behind the murder.

Mahasweta Devi spent about 30 minutes with Chandrasekharan’s family. A huge crowd had gathered in front of his house when the Jnanpith award winner arrived there.

Later, at a protest meeting organised by social activists and writers in Kozhikode, she said, “These sort of happenings must not be ignored and there must be a joint effort from cultural leaders and writers to raise their voice against such incidents,” she said.

Socialist Janatha Democratic party leader M.P.Veerendrakumar said it is time social activists acted against political violence. Panchayat minister M.K. Muneer also attended the programme.

After a week, no headway in case

Even after a week, apart from the great hue and cry, the police is yet to make any real breakthrough in the TPC murder case.

Though police said they have identified the assassins, none of the hardcore criminals involved in the murder was so far arrested. Apart from taking into custody some of the associates in the crime, the real criminals continue to be elusive.

Various teams were sent to neighboring states, but their efforts have not been fruitful. Officials are not ready to divulge any information fearing any leak would cause damage to the probe. Police is also investigating the possibility of the assassins being killed by the conspirators.

Rumors were also doing the rounds that Kodi Suni, one of the key accused, was killed. But cops believe this as an effort to mislead the course of investigation.
