As the city gears up to celebrate the World Environment Day on June 5, there will be a number of activities going on in the coming week to support the green cause. From performances by bands, movie screenings to shopping events, here’s a lowdown on what to expect.
At Select CityWalk, the awareness week, which began yesterday, will have NGO Chintan educating people about e-waste. They are inviting people to dump their e-waste at the mall. Panchali from Chintan tells us, “Recently the government and Delhi Pollution Control Committeee came out with a ruling that says you cannot give away e-waste to the scrap collectors. Chintan is the authorised collector and storage partner with the committee. So we’ve set up bins at the mall for people to dump their e-waste there.”
A pledge tree will also be seen at the mall where shoppers can write and take a pledge to do their bit to save the environment.
Alliance Francaise will screen two French documentaries, Ma poubelle est un trésor, a documentary by Martin Meissonier and Pascal Signolet, that deal with the problems of waste and water pollution.
Delhi-based band Eka will be playing compositions compiled for the special day at ICCR Auditorium, Azad Bhavan on Sunday. From songs that urge the listener to take a pledge to save earth to those dedicated to the beauty nature, the band will perform just for the green cause.
“Creating awareness and initiating action amongst the youth is the key. Keeping this objective in mind, we’ve composed five tracks and shot a music video as well. Our song She’s beautiful (There is only one Earth) personifies the incredible beauty of earth. The underlying message of the song is that all of us can do small things to save the planet,” members of the band tell us.
Mocha Coffees and Conversations has come up with an innovative concept where they’re inviting guests to bring with them five or more old newspapers/magazines/books and drop them off at any Mocha outlet, which will be donated for recycling. “And as our way of thanking guests for their support, anyone who participates in this project will get a complimentary shake. This activity will continue for a week in the run up to World Environment Day and initiate conversations and an exchange of ideas. The scrap that is collected will not be sold. It will be donated to a scrap paper unit, thereby completing the chain,” says Shobita Kadan, vice president, Impresario Entertainment Hospitality Pvt. Ltd.
Also, designer Deepika Govind has come up with “Denim Green” collection, an organic denim collection for men and women. Through this collection, the designer seeks to promote eco fibre and hand-woven textiles. Apparently, the organic denim goes through the wet process in a plain rinse wash with simple enzymes. And this process is not harmful to the environment as well as consuming minimum water.
