[1]Lalit Kala Academy treated an excited bunch of art lovers in the capital with various colours of life in artworks of six artists at a group exhibition held recently. The participating artists at the exhibition included Rajib Deyashi, Kaushik Raha, Kalyan Ashis Pahari, Nilabja Bhattachariya, Konika Dhar and Nibedita Sen. From peaceful oceans to bustling city life, artists picked up various themes to depict their ideas and thoughts on the canvas.
Kaushik Raha, a 22-year-old artist from Kolkata’s College of Visual Arts showcased eight paintings that were inspired from the cityscape of Kolkata. This was his first exhibition in the capital and speaking about his experience, he says, “One of my paintings is already sold for Rs 60,000, and I got a very good response from this city. My artworks are mostly cityscapes that are inspired from daily life of old Calcutta streets mixed with my imagination. I also made some paintings on subjects like unemployment, the subconscious mind and the social condition of the youth.”
For Nibedita Sen, a Gurgaon-based artist, the main inspiration for her paintings is the deep blue sea, and that’s the reason why she says that blue is the most prominent colour in her artworks.
She adds, “I have been travelling for the past many years since my husband is in the merchant navy. I have been on long voyages and the sea runs within me. I have total 10 paintings on display and mostly I have painted the contrast between the sea and sky, where land is not visible.”
However, Rajib Deyashi, a Kolkata-based artist feels that his paintings are inspired primarily from the spiritual aspects of India, which is depicted in various elements of nature. He says, “I used symbolic representations of Lord Shiva (as bel patra) and Goddess Kali (red hibiscus flower) in my paintings to create landscapes. I used watercolours as the medium for 13 paintings displayed at the exhibition.”
