Padmanabhaswamy temple-model security for RBI

The regional office of the Reserve Bank of India at Kochi could soon be provided a five layer security cover like the Padmanabhaswamy temple in Thiruvananthapuram in view of the increasing risk to its currency crest.

The Kochi police is understood to have worked out a detailed action plan for carrying out evaluation of the security measures necessary.

RBI general manager, C.V. George had at a security review meeting in Kochi last week asked for more security and also urged the police to put an end to unauthorised parking in front of the bank. He made it clear he did not want private buses halting near it either, fearing this could provide a cover for intruders.

“We have not yet finalised the measures we plan to take but two battalions of the special armed police force could be used to provide security outside the bank. We will have a meeting with bank officials before drawing up a permanent security system for it,” say police officers.

The security could involve installation of metal detectors, electronic sensors and wired sound alarms and a round-the-clock video surveillance system linked to a centralised security control room. A government committee may be formed to oversee the security, sources add.

While the Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation (KELTON) is expected to install the closed circuit cameras at the bank, RBI authorities too are working on their own security plans and are in the process of installing a Crash Rated Boom Barrier system in addition to its existing Perimeter Wall Intrusion Alert system.
