RTI activist and general secretary of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, Akhil Gogoi, here on Monday accused the appointment of 26,110 teachers through the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET) as a political gimmick.
Referring that eight school teachers and one fourth-grade employee of non-provincialised schools in the state were forced to commit suicide due to abject poverty and uncertain future, Mr Gogoi said that the extensive exercise of conducting the TET examination in the state would turn futile as the services of the TET qualified teachers will get terminated automatically after five years as per the terms and conditions their agreement letters. He also regretted that the issue of teachers committing suicide in the state has not been given due importance outside Assam. “This is an alarming trend which has started during the Congress regime,” he said.
In what he described an attempt to push hundreds of meritorious students towards an uncertain career, Mr Gogoi said that the TET-qualified teachers can’t even form unions, which is an autocratic decision. Asking the government the reason for not appointing 12,800 TET-qualified candidates on regular posts of teachers, Mr Gogoi accused the ruling Congress government of conspiring to abolish all permanent posts.
