Dogs have been considered as man’s best and most loyal friends from time immemorial. However, residents of Sanjeevaiah Nagar, Railway Colony, Syndicate Bank Colony, Trimulgherry and Bolaram, to name a few, are fed up of the canines.
Despite repeated complaints against stray dogs, the Secunderabad Cantonment authorities have done nothing to capture them, said residents of Cantonment areas. “We are scared to let our children play outside. Recently, stray dogs came into the colony and started chasing everyone,” said K. Shantha Kumari, of Bank Colony lane.
“The dogs come in groups to eat discarded food at garbage dumping ground in Sanjeevaiah Nagar. They then fight among themselves and chase residents. Two persons were bitten while a third guy escaped with scratches a week ago,” said Kishan Yadav of Sanjeevaiah Nagar.
According to L. Stevenson of Railway Colony, the leftover food attracts dogs. “Two months back, I saw four puppies in the back lane of my house. Dogs will multiply if they are not sterilised,” he said. SCB chief executive officer S. Balakrishna admitted stray dogs were causing problems. “We will hire private dog capturing squads and seek the help of NGOs to mitigate the problem,” he said. Dog lovers are demanding a major dog shelter on the city outskirts which can be used to house the captured dogs and thus make the city free from stray dogs.
