With regard to the cellphone call details leak and telecast and publication of news regarding CBI joint director V.V. Laxminarayana and his classmate Vasireddy Chandrabala, the Central Crime Station has registered the case under criminal conspiracy, sections of the Indian Telegraphic Act for unlawfully knowing the contents of telegraphic messages, Information Technology Act and sections of the IPC.
Central Crime Station DCP John Victor said, “The complainant has asked how his call details were secured as it is confidential information. We will investigate into this.” The case has been booked under Sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 166, public servant disobeying the law, intent to cause injury to any person, 499 IPC (defamation), 500 IPC (punishment for defamation), Indian Telegraphic Act, IT Act and the Official Secrets Act.
It is suspected that the CBI joint director’s call details was leaked by a political leader’s relative with the help of a detective agency and the Nanded police. Meanwhile, the Cybera-bad cyber crime police booked another case regarding the call detail record leakage and news telecast on Sakshi TV regarding Ms Chandrabala.
An FIR has been issued against Sakshi senior correspondent K. Yadagiri Reddy and Nacharam inspector of police M. Srinivas Rao and others under stringent and non bailable sections of the Official Secrets Act, Indian Telegraphic Act, Information Technology Act and Indian Penal Code. The preliminary inquiry by the Cyberabad police found that Mr Yadagiri Reddy had approached Mr Srinivas Rao and given the number of Ms Chandrabala stating that it was regarding threat calls.
“The inspector used the email ID and password of Alwal DCP Venkateswara Rao, using his computer in the police station, and sent a request to the service provider Airtel on June 18. The request was sent along with other suspects’ numbers in a dacoity case asking for call details. After obtaining the call details, the inspector handed over the same to Yadagiri Reddy,” said an investigating official of Cyberabad.
Criminal conspiracy, act intended to insult the modesty of a woman, spreading and publishing alarming news or rumours, hacking, breaching confidentiality and privacy are the allegations levelled against the accused. Cyberabad commissioner of police Ch. D. Tirumala Rao said, “The case is booked as per the complaint lodged by Ms Chandrabala regarding telecast of a programme in the Sakshi news channel on June 21. The programme was telecast with a view to causing injury to her dignity and reputation by making public the confidential information of the call details of her mobile phone.”
The case has been booked under Sections 120B read with 505 (ii), 509 IPC, Sectiions 66 and 72 of the Information Technology Act 2000, Section 24 of the Indian Telegraph Act 1885 and Section 5 of the Official Secrets Act 1923. Cyber Crime ACP Pratap Reddy is investigating the case. Denying the allegations, Nacharam inspector Srini-vas Rao said, “I haven’t done anything wrong. They are investigating the case and let them do that.”
