CM seeks total rollback of hike

Chief minister Jayalalithaa on Friday said the reduction of petrol price by Rs3.13 a litre was
inadequate and the lowered petrol price was not commensurate with the steep fall in international crude oil price.

She urged the Congress-led Central government to reduce the petrol price to May 24 level when the steep hike of Rs7.50 a litre was made.

“The Congress-led Central government readily increases the petrol price without any delay whenever the crude prices goes up. But it is not showing the same interest to slash the price when crude prices fall,” Ms Jayalalithaa said in a statement issued here.

The petrol price was hiked by Rs7.50 per litre on May 24. However, a partial rollback of `2.13 a litre was announced on June 3 following protest by various political parties.

Ms Jayalalithaa said the marginal reduction of petrol price was an eyewash following protests that the price was not brought down despite fall in crude price.

“Considering the present crude oil price, the Centre should not only completely rollback the hike (of Rs7.50) made by it on May 24, but reduce the price even further .”
