Warren Anderson? CBI still trying

Immediately after the court verdict in the Bhopal gas tragedy case on Monday, the CBI maintained that its efforts to extradite Mr Warren Anderson, former chairman of the Union Carbide Corporation (UCC), who is also an accused in the case, is still on.
A senior CBI official said that the agency’s efforts to seek Mr Anderson extradition are still on. After the court’s verdict of Monday, the agency will once again pursue the matter through diplomatic channels, he added.
The official said that the agency took over the investigation of the case on December 6, 1984. A case was registered against former Mr Anderson, former chairman of Union Carbide Corporation, Keshub Mahindra, former MD (UCIL), Vijay Gokhale, former vice-president (UCIL) Kishore Kamdar, former works manager J. Mukund, Dr R.B. Roy Chaudhary, S.P. Choudhary, K.V. Shetty, S.I. Qureshi and others. The agency filed a chargesheet on December 1, 1987, said the official.
“The investigations included painstaking efforts by the CBI to get evidence from abroad as well as (to secure the) extradition of Mr Anderson. The court had taken cognisance on July 6, 1988 and Mr Anderson was declared an absconder. Non-bailable arrest warrants were issued by the CJM, Bhopal, and the CBI moved an extradition request with the United States on September 8, 1993 for the arrest and extradition of Anderson,” said the official.
“The entire trial, spread over 22 years, was mostly conducted by CBI special counsel C. Sahay, who was earlier deputy legal adviser in the agency,” said the official. Asked about the CBI’s plan to appeal against the judgment, the official refused to comment.
