The flow of traffic in the already congested north Chennai areas is now hit by the ongoing stormwater drain work carried out by the city corporation, even as metro rail work and recent traffic diversions have added to the traffic chaos in south and central Chennai.
The arterial Tiruvottiyur High Road that connects Old Washermanpet with Tiruvottiyur is clogged throughout the day because of the bottlenecks created by the drain work that is progressing slowly in the locality.
The roads in north Chennai are narrow and now the area has become so chaotic that vehicles are finding it extremely difficult to manoeuvre, says E. Balasubramanian, a local civic activist and a resident of Tiruvottiyur.
“As a ripple effect, the traffic snarls results in noise and dust pollution and we are forced to
clean our homes often,” he adds.
“It seems that the corporation have finished the construction of storm water drains but the entire channel is yet to be connected and closed ”, says M. Thuyamurthy a resident of Tolgate.
“If the civic authorities are going to delay this further, the situation will be difficult during the ensuing
monsoon”, Mr Thuyamurthy added.
The drain work is going slowly and any water stagnation will add to the existing mosquito menace, he adds.
The Chennai corporation official sources denied any delay in the construction of stormwater drains and said that the drain works are executed as per scheduled time and will be finished before the onset of monsoon.
