Vytilla hub is international, its approach road pathetic!

The Vytilla Mobility Hub may be of global standards. But the less said about the approach road, the better.

It’s been in a pathetic state ever since the posh bus terminal became functional. Speeding buses make life hell for pedestrians and two-wheeler riders with the dust and dirt from the potholes swirling up in the air.

The stretch along the Vytilla-Kaniyampuzha Road was earlier part of a coconut farm and the road was laid by filling it.

But no measures were taken to strengthen it while making it an approach road to the hub. “The problem compounds when it rains.

When the underground water level rises, portions of the road sink, leading to potholes all along. This is because the layering was not strengthened.

It was done in haste in a bid to complete it within a short span of time to meet the commissioning deadline of February 2011,” a PWD official said.

The stretch is where the maximum number of buses ply, with the KSRTC, private and inter-state buses to various directions, converging on the hub.

With heavy vehicles plying along, the seepage of rain water could loosen the earth below, the official said.

The ground beneath the road needed to be strengthened, he said. “The drainage should be made more deep and obstruction-free so as to facilitate easy flow of water,” he said.

Durga K.S., who regularly travels to Cherthala, said: “It’s very difficult and dangerous to walk along the stretch. They haven’t re-tarred the road. Each time it rains, the PWD just fills up the potholes.

This filling process will not solve the issue as new potholes appear. It’s a roller coaster ride for passengers while pedestrians suffer from the dust all over.”

Mobility Hub Society MD M.Beena said: “We’ll ask the PWD to take corrective measures without fail and at the earliest.”
