[1]With the online matchmaking and user-friendly matrimonial websites getting popular in the state, an increasing number of cyber duping cases and marriage frauds have become the matter of a great concern to the police.
All recent arrests of marriage fraudsters have proved the culprits had used matrimonial websites to link up with the victims. The one held in Thrikkakara and one in Alappuzha told the police that they got the contact details of the victims from matrimonial websites here.
The police said most of the marriage fraudsters advertising in the matrimonial portals say "they are Richie-rich" divorced men looking for bride. “These people mainly target divorced women, as they seem to be vulnerable targets to the fraudsters. Also the culprits are usually aged, so they can only advertise as divorced men,” said a police source, who is probing frauds through marriage portals.
The Thrikkakara incident saw a man linking up with divorced women through matrimonial websites and later meeting up outside web. He, then, exploited the victims to the maximum and later absconded saying he cannot marry them.
According to an online survey, matrimonial portals have become the most preferred option for soulmate seekers in India. However the portal owners are of the opinion that websites cannott go beyond a proper limit in carrying out security checks, so it is equally crucial for the users to remain vigilant.
