The Supreme Court was approached in a PIL on Monday in the Guwahati molestation case with a plea for awarding her compensation of `27 lakh for violation of her fundamental rights and a direction to the Centre to take stern action against the Assam government.
The PIL was filed by 82-year-old Indore-based right activist Satya Pal Anand, who has been taking up such issues of violation of fundamental rights before the Supreme Court for the past three decades whenever such incidents had taken place in any part of the country.
Citing the 1994 Constitution bench verdict in the famous S.R. Bomai case, the PIL said that as per the SC ruling in the case, the Centre was empowered to dismiss a state government for such “gross violation” of fundamental rights of a citizens, particularly those who were in disadvantageous groups like miners. It said that the court could issue a direction to the Centre to take an “appropriate action” against the Assam government as per the spirit of the Bomai judgment.
The PIL has named PM, who also represents Assam in Rajya Sabha as an MP, as respondent among others, which include the chief minister of the state, Union of India through Cabinet secretary.

NCW probe team returns without meeting gogoi

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi here on Monday expressed surprise over the two-member National Commission for Women, which was here to probe city molestation case, leaving the state without meeting him.
Mr Gogoi told reporters, “I have not been able to understand the reason for not meeting me. As a chief minister of the state they should have met me also.”
The sudden departure of the team has even left Assam State Women’s Commission and many other rights groups surprised.
The team, comprising NCW members Alka Lamba and Wansuk Syiem, had arrived here on Saturday to probe the molestation case. The NCW team also addressed a press conference. However, it created resentment among the rights group, which objected to Ms Lamba naming the victim in the press conference.
When contacted, Assam State Women Commission chairperson Meera Barooah said, “We were supposed to meet the chief minister on Sunday at 6 pm. But the national team left the city in the afternoon. They said they had to leave as they had to report to Delhi immediately.”
