The MBBS management quota row has taken a turn for the worse with private medical colleges revolting against the state government, stating that it has no power to interfere in the matter.
The managements are not accepting the admissions made by the government for Categories A and B through Eamcet counselling on the pretext that there is no clarity regarding admissions for Category C (management quota) seats and that a case is pending in the AP High Court regarding the same.
Admissions refused, students shocked
Medical counselling is being held to fill 2,050 medical seats in 14 government medical colleges and 3,050 seats in 22 private medical colleges. The NTR University of Health Sciences has already completed counselling for general category students and all seats in private medical colleges have been filled. The varsity had asked students to report by July 31 at the respective medical colleges where they have been allotted seats.
However, students were shocked to find that the managements were refusing admissions on one pretext or the other despite them having valid seat allotment letters from NTRUHS. They are now tense as the July 31 deadline for MBBS admissions is fast approaching.
As per norms, NTRUHS fills 50 per cent of seats in private medical colleges under Category A for fees of Rs 60,000 per annum and 10 per cent Category B seats for fees of Rs 2,40,000 per annum based on merit secured in Eamcet. The managements are allowed to fill the remaining 40 per cent seats on their own according to the 10+2 merit list and adopting transparent methods in the admission procedure.
However, it has been alleged that the managements auction these seats and allot them to students who are willing to pay up to Rs 70 lakh depending on demand. With largescale complaints, the government had proposed to fill Category C seats online to check irregularities and this has become a bone of contention. A petition had been filed in the HC over irregularities in management quota admissions and the verdict is awaited. The managements are trying to take advantage of this pending case and are putting the future of students who were allotted Category A and B seats in Eamcet counselling in jeopardy.
“When we approached the medical colleges with the Eamcet seat allotment letter, there was no response. They are asking us to contact the managements who say that the management quota seats case is pending in the HC and they cannot admit us unless there is clarity on the issue. While the case is about Category C seats, the managements are trying to link this to Category A and B seats, which were filled solely on the basis of merit in the counselling conducted by the state government,” said P.
